RESPIRATION CIRCLE

Concept:
Respiration Circle is a performance installation set within the ancient landscape of the Pilliga, a vast and ecologically rich forest in northwestern New South Wales. Staged at the Salt Caves camp, this work explores the interdependence between humans and trees through the act of breathing—a quiet, continuous exchange that sustains life.
At its core, Respiration Circle draws attention to the invisible yet vital cycle of respiration: the reciprocal flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide between people and plants. While humans rely entirely on this exchange for survival, trees participate in it as part of a broader ecological rhythm. This asymmetry underscores our vulnerability and dependence on the natural world, inviting reflection and gratitude.
Participants become aware of their own inhalations and exhalations as part of a larger, shared system—one that binds all living beings in a continuous loop of giving and receiving. The Pilliga, with its diverse flora and deep cultural significance, becomes both setting and collaborator in this work, reminding us that the forest breathes with us, not for us.
Through this quiet choreography of breath, Respiration Circle offers a meditative space to consider ecological reciprocity, the fragility of human life, and the enduring wisdom of trees.
