FIBRE TO ROPE (Durational performance)
Materials:
Native fibres (dianella, lomandra, gymea lily, stringybark), granite, form board, steel, stepper motor, microelectronics
Concept:
Creating cordage by hand is a labor-intensive process that emphasises collaboration and patience. For this piece, artist Flanagan has gathered and finger-spun native fibres—specifically lomandra and dionella leaves—sourced locally. These fibres are laced onto a rope-making machine, and gradually twisted throughout the duration of the exhibition.
At each site where the Landrelations exhibition is hosted, new local fibres will be sourced and incorporated, embedding a sense of place and connection into each new length of cordage. This ongoing process embodies themes of community, sustainability, and the living relationship between land and craft.
